
Buster Sword - Assignment 2

For my second assignment, I chose to create the iconic Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII.
Initially I had a play around recreating the one from the game on the original Playstation, to get a feel of how to go about things. Once I was confident with that, I began work on the sword depicted from the movie, as seen in a screenshot below.
Some of the notable modelling techniques involved included extrudes, mirroring, merges, booleans and the quad draw tool for the cross-guard detail.
Once completed, I created a low-poly version and began the texturing/baking process to create maps for normals, ambient occlusion and the diffuse/colour map.
Once this was completed to my satisfaction, the low-poly and maps were imported into Unreal Engine, so I could take some beauty shots of the sword in a few sample environments, as displayed below.
The above two newer shots were from when I decided to revisit this project and use it to test working with Substance Painter, which certainly helped add a degree of realism..
